Normally rain fed, Wiliamsport Falls is typically completely dry this time of year. With as many days as there is no water plunging over the sandstone lip the falls have earned the nickname "Dry Falls".  This year however, throughout the summer there has been an unusual amount of rain.  As fall hit and the foliage started to change it seems that there is no end to the amount of rain falling in Western Indiana.  There was an exceptional amount of water headed over the falls as the sun began to set this evening.

This unusual amount of water flow led to a considerable amount of noise coming up from the gorge below.  The echo from the stone face and the surrounding bowl like landscape only shows up when you round the corner at the top of the trailhead.  One step is quiet and the next deafening.

Williamsport Falls - From the top Williamsport falls is located just south of downtown Williamsport, Indiana in Warren County.  The falls are the tallest plunge falls in the state of Indiana.  Upon reaching the edge of the cliff, water tumbles 90 feet to the pool below.

The thumbnail (left) is a quick view from the top of the falls.  The slick rocks are guarded by a fence that forms the boundary to the parking lot for the trail.  It is a short hike to the bottom of the falls and the lower banks of the Fall Branch Creek.

At some point during the history of Warren County there was a mill located atop the sandstone falls.  Before agriculture began to divert water away, the falls it would flow nearly every day.
